Securing the 2012 Summer Olympics

British Transport Police boosts security management planning for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games using Intergraph's ERDAS APOLLO.

In preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, slated to take place in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012, the British Transport Police (BTP), the national police force for Britain’s railways, has begun working alongside a number of police forces on Olympic security planning. To help protect the thousands of athletes, spectators and officials expected to attend the games, BTP, which provides policing service to rail operators, their staff and passengers throughout England, Wales and Scotland, has developed a spatial information infrastructure (SII) environment for Olympic security planning that is capable of supporting multiple agencies.

As part of the intelligence operation, organized to guarantee sharing of critical information between security partners, BTP needed to understand how to effectively store and manage gigabytes of aerial imagery and raster mapping, and, ultimately, how to deliver that data in a timely fashion. Intergraph's ERDAS APOLLO was chosen, and is being implemented to store and share BTP’s gridded data stores as well as support the requirements of the SII for Olympic security management.

By employing Intergraph's ERDAS APOLLO, BTP will be able to increase efficiency and enable interoperability between several national agencies. In addition, the system will provide access for a wide range of business requirements, including operational and strategic planning, crime analysis and civil contingency planning.
